Understanding Tonsillitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Tonsillitis happens when your tonsils swell. It is usually caused by viruses, but it may also stem from bacterial infections. The condition commonly affects teens and typically presents with signs like a sore throat, raised body temperature, ear pain, and swollen glands.

A general practitioner might diagnose it through a physical examination of the throat and through the use of a throat swab to detect the presence of bacteria. To treat viral cases, the focus is on reducing symptoms through hydration and rest. Antibiotics become necessary if the infection is bacterial, though this is rare.

Chronic tonsillitis, a tonsillectomy is an option if there are multiple severe episodes. Preventative measures include avoiding contact with others during symptoms.
